Changes To Overseas Investment Regime Announced
On 27 September the New Zealand Government announced the outcome of a review of the current framework for considering applications for the approval of overseas investment in New Zealand. In announcing the changes to be made as a result of the review, Finance Minister Bill English said that the changes will provide extra flexibility to enable a wider range of issues to be considered - including large-scale ownership of farmland. Firm sponsors Art Fair

Hesketh Henry is the Principal Partner of the Auckland Art Fair 09, one of the largest exhibitions of contemporary art in Australasia. Over 40 of Australia and New Zealand’s leading art galleries will display the work of the countries’ hottest artists during the three day exhibition, to be held from May 1 to May 3 at the Auckland Marine Centre in Halsey Street. The showcase of contemporary art is expected to attract over 12,000 visitors.

Hesketh Henry to sponsor Focus on Health Innovation Challenge
The Challenge brings together an extensive network of United States and New Zealand based judges, advisors, and mentors from medical, academic and business backgrounds, as well as potential investors, buyers and partners. As participants move through The Challenge they will receive expert advice and feedback from “The Challenge Network.”

So far over 100 companies have expressed interest in participating in the challenge, with the final ten being provided with free professional services, mentors, and business development support for six months to develop their idea into a prototype/product. Sponsored event raises $150,000 for Women's Refuge

Hesketh Henry hosted Prime Minister John Key at the presentation of a cheque for $150,000 to Women’s Refuge, last week. The funds were raised by the Hesketh Henry sponsored NZ Sculpture OnShore exhibition held at Devonport last November. It brings the total donated to the refuge movement by the charitable trust Friends of Women’s Refuges, organisers of NZ Sculpture OnShore, to $1.16 million over the 11 exhibitions held since 1994.

The Hesketh Henry sponsored NZ Sculpture OnShore exhibition opens to the public on Friday, November 7 with over 110 artworks from New Zealand artists exhibiting their work at the spectacular Takapuna Historic Reserve in Devonport. Curator Rob Garret brings a fresh approach to this year's show by including work by newly emerging sculptors alongside established artist. New Swedish consulate for Auckland.
Mike Toepfer, a senior partner with Auckland law firm, Hesketh Henry, has been appointed the Honorary Consul of Sweden in Auckland.

Mr Toepfer, whose paternal great grandparents were Swedish, will represent Sweden at official functions, assist Swedish nationals in New Zealand, and promote the country in general.

The Swedish consular office will be relocated to the firm’s Shortland Street offices in the new year.

Mr Toepfer has been with Hesketh Henry for the past 16 years, is a current Board member and specialises in Commercial Property.

He joins the firm’s Managing Partner, Erich Bachmann, who was appointed as the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Auckland in April.

Litigation specialist, Patrick McPherson, has been
named a Partner at Hesketh Henry.

Making the announcement, Managing Partner, Erich Bachmann, praised Patrick for the outstanding contribution he has made to the firm in his three year tenure.

“Patrick is a very good lawyer whose skills are valued highly by clients and colleagues. We are very pleased to have him on board as a Partner,” said Mr Bachmann.

Patrick specialises in commercial and public law litigation. His areas of expertise include contract and company law, injunctions and emergency orders, administrative and regulatory law, gambling law, property disputes and negligence actions.

“It’s important to get alongside your clients, understand their business and objectives and be proactive in protecting their interests”, said Patrick.

“I look forward to being a Partner and working with one of the best litigation teams in the country,” he added.
