Young construction lawyers undertake site visit

Written by Mary Battersby and Nina Thomson on June 8th, 2015.

On 26 May 2015, Mary Battersby and Nina Thomson, members of the Hesketh Henry construction law team, battled the elements to go on a site visit to see the construction of the new Fonterra Headquarters, located on Fanshawe Street, opposite Victoria Park. This was organised as part of the young lawyers division of the New Zealand Society of Construction Law.

Mary and Nina, along with eighteen other lawyers from construction legal teams around Auckland, gathered in an on-site container to get work-site ready (donning gumboots, hardhat and safety glasses). From there, they were taken on a tour of what would be the 16,000sq metre, main office building. The seven story building has a five Green Star Design rating, incorporating environmentally sustainable materials and employing energy efficient building practices.

Unlike traditional offices, the building is open in the centre, with industrial-style stairs zigzagging up the middle. Foot bridges across the open centre will give office users easy access to the other side of each floor. The roof, once completed, will be like a giant skylight, letting natural light flood down to the foyer. And the interior is to be left in its natural state; beams will be left concreate and pipes and wires on the ceiling will remain visible. The design is said to reflect Fonterra’s connection to the land.

The building is due to be completed in January 2016. We are looking forward to seeing it in its finished state.
