Colin Hunter is a Senior Associate in the Trade and Transport and Insurance teams. Colin has extensive experience in insurance (particularly with marine insurance cargo and hull policies), admiralty and ship arrest, cargo claims (bulk and containerised), private international law, arbitration, aviation, personal property, and consumer law.

As counsel Colin has argued a variety of cases on private international law, admiralty, arbitration, procedure, and general civil litigation. He has been involved in supporting appellate case law before the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court on issues of insurance, tort, contract and equity. He also acts in international (particularly maritime arbitration such as LMAA, SCMA) and domestic arbitration.

Colin is involved in significant cross border litigation. He works closely with foreign counsel. He has experience with maritime law and ship arrest in the Cook Islands; and cargo claims in many states including Australia, many US states, China, the European Union nations (particularly Germany, Denmark and France), UK, Singapore, Republic of Korea, and Indonesia.

Colin also has experience advising on New Zealand trade imports, insurance provisions, personal property security, and insurer registration.

Colin is a long-standing member of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand. He is the secretary of the New Zealand Branch. Colin regularly presents on contract, maritime, and insurance law. He is recognised by International Legal Directory Legal500 AsiaPacific as a “Leading Associate’. Outside of practice, He is committed to community service and has volunteered as a teacher and cook for those in need.
