Discussing employer obligations on TVNZ’s Breakfast show

Jodi Sharman, a Partner in our Employment Law Team, recently appeared on Breakfast to discuss the interesting matter currently before the Employment Court where Dr Siouxsie Wiles has brought a claim against her employer, the University of Auckland.  Dr Wiles alleges an ongoing unjustified disadvantage at work claim arising from the university’s alleged failure to appropriately address her safety concerns following her commentary regarding Covid-19.  She also alleges the university breached the relevant collective agreement and its good faith obligations.

While we still await a decision, the case highlights the employment institutions and WorkSafe’s recognition that an employer has legal obligations to take steps to protect against physical and psychosocial harm an employee may face while carrying out work.  If you have any questions, please contact our Employment Law Team or your usual Hesketh Henry contact.
