Richard is a Senior Associate in our Commercial Property Team

Richard advises clients on the acquisition and disposal of significant commercial property portfolios, as well as a broad range of property matters including land development, property financing, due diligence and leasing.

Richard specialises in subdivisions, as well as complex title matters and cross lease issues.  Richard enjoys collaborating with other consultants, such as surveyors, planners and accountants as part of large-scale property development projects.  He regularly assists property developers, financiers and investors with all property aspects of due diligence.

Richard has extensive experience in residential property transactions, providing practical and effective advice for first home buyers through to experienced property investors and high net worth individuals on the sale and purchase of residential properties, including “off the plans” agreements and occupation right agreements.

Richard was admitted to the bar in 2014 and draws on his background in general practice and experience in a national law firm to provide tailored advice to clients.  He is fluent in basic Mandarin and is currently on The Law Association of New Zealand’s Property Law Committee and the New Zealand Law Society’s Property Law Section.

Richard regularly presents seminars to other lawyers, property professionals and the general public on various property topics including buying “off the plans”, settlement issues and guiding first home buyers through the home buying process.

Examples of work completed by Richard include:

  • Acting for the Marianne Caughey Smith-Preston Memorial Rest Homes Trust on the sale of the former Caughey Preston Rest Home site, a large strategic land holding in Remuera.
  • Acting for Kahawai Point Developments Limited on the subdivision of McLarin Road, Glenbrook, financing arrangements, infrastructure service contracts and on-sale agreements.
  • Acting for a business on a sale and leaseback of its retail and office site in Newmarket.
