A conversation with Alison Maelzer

We are pleased to introduce Alison Maelzer, Partner at Hesketh Henry.

Alison has been part of the Hesketh Henry team since 2007.

What is your role at Hesketh Henry?

I am a partner in the Employment Law Team.

How long have you been with Hesketh Henry?

I joined Hesketh Henry in 2007, following time at a local government organisation, and another large law firm.

What’s your leadership style?

I like to think that I take a collaborative approach to leadership – I’m always happy to listen to different perspectives and I never assume I have all the answers!  I’m generally good at getting everyone to put all the options on the table, and then sifting through them to make a decision.

How are you inspired?

I am inspired by the work of my colleagues (both at Hesketh Henry, and within the wider legal community).  There are so many different skill-sets and approaches to practicing law, and management. It is nice to be able to take a ‘pick and mix’ approach – pulling ideas and inspiration from lots of different sources.

What do you think sets Hesketh Henry apart from other legal firms in New Zealand?

Hesketh Henry has a long history, and an exciting future.  The firm has an impressive reputation in its key specialisations, and a culture which encourages cooperation and collaboration.  One of the things I like most about Hesketh Henry is that it is not stuffy or pretentious.  We take our work seriously, but not ourselves. We don’t stand on ceremony or hide behind hierarchies.

What are some exciting opportunities for NZ businesses in the near future?

In the employment space, things are always changing!  Regardless of your political viewpoint, and whether you see it as a positive, there is a lot of legislative change, fast approaching.  Fair Pay Agreements, changes to the Holidays Act, and a possible Income Insurance Scheme are in the pipeline. Employers will need to adapt!

What do you like to do when you get some free time?

Be outside! I love the beach, swimming, and the bush.  I’m looking forward to a family camping trip in Paihia over summer, and family from the UK visiting at Easter next year.

Where is your favourite place to travel?

We usually head North – we have family near Whangārei so that is our go-to, but any road-trip around NZ is a winner.
